The Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Program Registration and Attestation System portal is now functional and is expected to bring great revolution in the healthcare IT industry. This portal enables eligible hospitals and physicians to meet stage 1 “meaningful use” criteria.
The registration process has already begun in many states in the first week of January while in other states it is due to begin in February. There are also many states that plan to launch their Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs during the spring and summer of this year. The CMS website urges prompt registration by members and also provides general guidelines to users about the entire registration process.
Eligible professionals are required to have an active National Provider Identifier (NPI) to operate the portal. In order to be able to access the registration system, they also need a web account for the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES). As it takes an active NPI to register eligible hospitals, users need an organization NPI to register on behalf of a hospital.
The number of registrations for this program is predicted to be higher in January by entities that are beginning their EHR reporting this month. Users need to understand that the process is new and it will take some time to fully merge with existing practices. It will also take some time for CMS to determine actual meaningful users.
